Introduction

Internship and Interdisciplinary Programs

In curriculum design, the Department emphasizes a balance between theory and practice. The undergraduate program offers a well-rounded curriculum that includes fundamental, core, professional, general education, and elective courses. Courses such as Special Topics in Biotechnology Internship and Research Project are designed to cultivate students’ abilities in independent research and innovative development.

The Department assigns a dedicated internship advisor who arranges off-campus internships for students at over ten collaborating institutions during winter and summer breaks. Students are required to complete at least 160 hours of internship in biomedical-related companies or research institutes. Our internship partners include the Biomedical Technology and Device Research Laboratories at ITRI, Mackay Memorial Hospital, Taoyuan General Hospital of the Ministry of Health and Welfare, Cathay General Hospital, and Gloria BioTech Corporation. Through these experiences, students gain hands-on research and industrial insight, enhancing their competitiveness in the biotechnology job market.

Program

To strengthen interdisciplinary learning, the total graduation requirement has been adjusted to 128 credits, allowing students more flexibility to pursue minors, interdisciplinary programs, or career-oriented programs. The Department currently offers the Interdisciplinary Program in Biotechnology and Health Food and the Gloria BioTech Career Program. Students are also encouraged to take minors in the Colleges of Science, Engineering, Electrical and Computer Science, Business, or Law. Faculty mentors regularly provide guidance during registration and advising sessions, encouraging students to select programs that align with their interests and career goals. The Department also promotes inter-university course enrollment opportunities to broaden academic exposure.

To further improve students’ employability, the Interdisciplinary Program in Biotechnology and Health Food was launched in 2011. After the Health Food R&D Engineer and Junior Engineer Certification Exams were formally established in 2013, the curriculum was revised to align more closely with certification requirements and industry standards.
